Pharmacology and pharmacokinetics functions

Glucosamine is an endogenous substance in humans. It acts as precursor in the synthesis of glycosaminoglycans of hyaluronic acid, which are part of the ground substance of articular cartilage. Exogenously administrated glucosamine increases the formation of proteoglycans in the cartilage and inhibits the degradation of cartilage. Long-term studies indicate that Glucosamine inhibits the degradation of articular cartilage, probably by inhibition of the catabolic enzymes. Clinical studies have shown that glucosamine relieves pain after 4 weeks of treatment and improves mobility of the affected joints in patients with mild to moderate osteoarthritis
